The annual Alaska fishing trip was in full effect starting June 19th, and 8 of us took to the skies from San Francisco for Anchorage in what was soon to be one the best trips this group has seen in a long time. We fished three different rivers for Salmon and one day on the Bering Sea out of the cook inlet, for halibut. This was truly a great adventure and one that I will not miss in the years to come.
In attendance this year were James, Rick, Bruce, Reinhard, Ralph, Joe, Bert and myself. We shared two cabins in Palmer AK, about 1.5 hours north of Anchorage. The mosquitoes were heavy but non of us seamed to care much. I guess the thought of the up and coming fishing days just melted all negative thoughts away. There was a Fred Meyers close by and we ended up going there every day. In fact there were several days we showed up twice.
The second part of the trip was 3 hours south of Anchorage in a small community called Soldotna. We had one large Cabin with a small cabin next to it on the Kenai river. It was a great setting and the cabin was perfect as it had a lot of room for us to sit around and chat away the adventure we had the ones to come. There was a rather large deck on the river side that a few of us spent many nights reminiscing about our past few days, and telling fish storied of trips gone by. The town had a hardware/Fishing store called Soldotna Hardware. Best prices in Alaska and I would go out on a limb to say the best prices in the States. Joe, Bert, and Reinhard were great Fly Fishing Teachers and I was able to work the elegant fly pole with little effort, so I ended up getting my Fly rod and reel at a great price with quite a bit of great help from Joe while we were at the Soldotna store.
The fishing started on a large river about 2 hours north of Anchorage. Once there Jim talked me though the basics of Salmon fishing we climbed into the river with waders on and started our relaxing day. We met a nice couple whose daughter was a singer. A few hours later, their daughter, Scout Smith came down to the river-side with her Guitar and sang for us, for many hours. What a wonderful way to start out the Vacation.
I placed all of my photos up here and once Bruce gets me his, I will add them to this album.
